Whenever I hear of a new ground going up somewhere around the Country, the first question I always need to know the answer to is how far away from the old one is the new stadium going to be

Where was the showground? Where was Northampton's County Ground? I'm interested in the really old stuff as well like where the Woolwich Arsenal first kicked a ball and where Newcastle first started off (weren't they the result of a merger 100 odd years ago?)

Looking forward to what anyone can put up

I'll start off with the Eastville - Memorial Stadium sites

Good post sort of thing I'm interested in too, I haven't got a map but Oxford's new stadium is between 4 or 5 miles from the Old Manor Ground.

Shrews were formed in 1886 and didn't start playing at Gay Meadow until 1910 so plenty of prior history

click the PDF link and check out the second page. There's a map and further details.

Wolves moved two miles to Molineux. WV2 3HP is the post code of where the Fighting Cocks pub used to stand, the ground was on the opposite side of Goldthorn Hill, with only the name 'Wanderers Avenue' left to suggest what once stood there. Ironically, the site also contains a street named Hawthorne Rd.
There's a ground if you want to go.

Did we play at Dudley Road before we moved to the Molineux in 1889?

Alot of people think the Keepmoat and Belle Vue are a long way from each other. By road they're not really close. But by walking through the footpaths in the area etc, it really isn't a long walk. The car park at Belle Vue used to be packed on matchdays not surprisingly. It's still busy now on matchdays, we park there for home games and walk to the stadium (about 15 minutes). Always baffles me when the away fans say we've moved a huge difference, in reality we have not moved far at all.

Is the old ground still there or has it been knocked down?

Here is the two Northampton Grounds, with Sixfields being just under 4 miles from the County Ground which is on the other side of the town, and is still being used for cricket

The site of the Old Den is a 5-10 min walk from the New Den. I'm not technically minded enough to be able to link to google maps etc. From the new ground, walk down Surrey Canal Road, turn right into Cold Blow Lane. There's a housing estate a couple of hundrd metres down the road on the right - I think one of the new roads is called 'John Williams Close' - that's where the ground used to be. Absolutely nothing left whatsoever to tell you that the ground used to be there. However, the site of the New Cross Stadium - used for greyhound racing and immediately backed onto the Den - is still open land. There is stll distinct banking where the main stand used to be and it's from the top of this bank where fans used to get a free view of the football after the stadium was demolished in the late seventies. This site is best accessed by the blue footbridge which crosses Surrey Canal Road.

The top two photos show the free view afforded from the greyhound stadium site. http://www.millwall-...uk/the_den1.htm

That could have led to some comedy japes if Wolves played at The Hawthornes with Albion at The Hawthorns.

It's like fans visiting Spurs and going Underground to Tottenham Court Road (It does happen!) or fans visiting Bury and heading for Bury St Edmunds!
It's easy to criticise....Fun too!

Out of interest, was there ever any thoughts to share at Franklins Gardens? No disrespect to Sixfields, but this is a much better stadium

No idea if I'm honest, the move to Sixfields was in 1994 and I was 3 at the time! I think other sites were considered at different times, but don't think any included being shared with the rugby club.

Also Frankilns Gardens may now be a better ground than Sixfields but the Gardens was compleatly rebuilt around the 2000-2002 period so before that Sixfields was probably the better stadium.

This is the best picture of the old Franklin's Gardens I could find

I would but I don't know where former sites were to be able to do it

It's very easy though -

- Click on my link at the top to the Rovers sites

- On the left hand side of the screen you'll see 2 boxes marked A and B

- In box A put in the postcode/street name/business of the former home (I typed in Ikea, Eastville) that is there now

- In box B put in the postcode/stadium name of the new stadium. Click ger directions

- To post link to map here, click on the word 'link' above the map and copy the web address into your post here

Try doing this with The manor Ground and the Kassam

There should be a preservation order on that website......the internet's equivalent of a listed building.
If we were ever to move from the rec, I hope someone puts together a set of pictures like that.
A real trip down memory lane (painful memories!!!)

I didn't realise how close they actually were! Having just been to the SOL I didn't actually go and explore and look for Roker Park. But I'll definately have a look when I'm next in the North East
