I was watching the Gillingham Vs Villa FA cup game the other day and before the kick-off the TV cameras showed a close up of the Gillingham badge on top of the main stand and I wondered what the black and white stripes on one side of it were in aid of? The white Horse I understand but what has the black and white got to do with a club whose home colours are blue?

Got me thinking about why other clubs have particular logos on their badges, Everton's and Port Vale's spring to mind. Some are obviously straight forward but what reasons for the not so obvious?

Rovers is pretty straight forward but I'll start the thread off as I'm here -

Bristol of course has a long history of being a seafaring town and good old Captain Blackbeard the Pirate himself was a Bristol lad. The badge simply represents the City's history and our nickname

Personally though I would have preferred a man in a boiler suit

Ours is one that confuses a few people (including some Watford supporters!)
"why have you got a dopey looking moose on your badge?"

Well its not a moose, its a "Hart", which is an old time name for a stag..which in turn represents the county of Hertfordshire.
"Hart"=Hertfordshire? No wonder people are confused! blink.gif

Every now and again fans of the club try to start a campaign to return to either the old town crest we used to have as a badge..or something with a Hornet motif.
I can see their point. Especialy as the reason we got the Hart in the first place was because we were Hertfordshires only league club..and within a couple of years..we wasnt!

The ridsdale era is what it reminds me of. Simple enough shield design, white rose and lufc down the middle. White, yellow and blue are our colours. No meaningful explanations really

The clubs current crest was designed in the 1950s and contains the green hill of High Barnet and the red rose, white rose and crossed swords representing the 1471 Battle of Barnet, a pivotal battle in the Wars of the Roses. This Badge was designed by the chairman at the time Mr Sidney Robert Price.

Mr Sidney Robert Price has only recently been recognised as the man behind the Barnet Badge. A fact how ever well known by generations of Prices' from Sidney Robert Price down to Barry Price, James Price,James Price jnr,Jack Price and Harry Price.A part of Barnet Football Club history will live on forever with the Price Family.

Thanks wiki.

This was designed by Jimmy Sirrell in 1968 I believe.

Club colours (red, white, black), a Yorkshire rose (Sheffield's in yorkshire), name, and date of formation - job done!

EDIT: There are also two swords - we're the Blades! rolleyes.gif

Blue and White stripes from the club strip!
A Throstle (Thrush) found in abundance on The Hawthorns plot before it became a football ground.
At one time, Albion had a lucky Throstle that attended games. It wasn't so lucky as it was kept in a cage!

It's easy to criticise....Fun too!

Staffordshire knot top right of the shield and a Kiln to represent the Potteries in the bottom left. Name of club and date founded is the rest.

One of my personal favourites that, the other side in town is probably the only one that trumps the crapness of ours!

I'll be honest, I'm not a great fan of our badge and would prefer something much more like the Cities crest (which is used in part by Cambridge City & CRUFC. And also my college!)

The football is an updated part of the focus of some older crests, and the 'turrets' on top represent King's College Chapel. That's about it really. There are two (or more) older crests which featured much more historical or cultural reference, even if they were still crap. I can't find them online though, but I'll have a good look for them at some point.

Our recent one
is an updated version of this classic

Most older Chelsea myself included prefer the 1953 badge(above) which belongs to Lord Cadogan a rich local family.
We're the Fulham Road supporters & we're louder than the Kop....................

To answer your question

The Black and White stripes represent our past as New Brompton FC, which was our initial name until the 1913. In those days black and white were the colours we played in

The horse, Invicta is the symbol of Kent - its slightly altered though if you look at its mane, it reads Gills

The Terrier represents our nickname; the Terriers.
There are two white roses; Yorkshire.
Blue and White stripes; club colours.
Castle Hill; Huddersfield kind of landmark thing.

The rest of the things are left overs from the Town crest, as our badge was an adaptation of this made relevant to the club.

The original;

The club tried to redesign the badge during the Rubery era to try and make us appear European or something...

ours is simple enough with the centre part coming from the town crest with a hat on the top to signify the town's hat making past, with the club name, and 1885 was added this year which is the year the club was founded.

What he said laugh.gif

Also the 'Domus Clamantium' bit at the bottom literally translates into 'Home of the Shouting Men', which is one of our nicknames. I knew that Latin education would come in handy for something one day.....

The 5 lions represent the 5 lions on the coat of arms of the City of York.
The 'Y' in the background could be to do with the old 'Y-front' shirts we wore in the 70's, or simply just the other obvious explanation...! I'm not entirely sure to be honest.
The '+' sign type things and the 'statues' on the top are representative of the bars that can be found in York, as shown below:

I refuse to put Bristol Citys badge up because it is so rubbish and bears so much resemblance to the rugby, bowls, tennis clubs, sports hating council and is a symbol of the whole of Bristol which fails to acknowledge Rovers have as much claim to it as Bristol City FC.

The current Blackpool FC crest is simply the coat of arms of the town of Blackpool. The motto is Progress and the crest depicts waves and a seagull, representing the seaside town that we are. On the top are the four sails representing a windmill which are found frequently throughout the Fylde coast. The town crest in its present form came into being in 1899 and has been used on and off by the football club as its badge for some considerable time.

There was a time when the club went away from using the town's crest and tried a seagull design and an impressionistic tower design but both fell by the wayside and the Progress crest has, within the last few years, come back into being on the club's shirts.

Incidentally when the club was first established in its present form in 1887 the town coat of arms was a much more primitive affair; divided into four quarters it was still representative of a seaside town with a pier, a bathing hut etc and even then this was used on some of the early shirts worn by the club.

This was followed by shirts with an Edwardian style monogram of BFC, shirts with no badges at all and then the current town crest which seems to have been used, on and off, since the club changed its shirt colour to tangerine. A crown type crest appeared when the shirts were changed to light and dark blue stripes but this went out of fashion once tangerine shirts were reintroduced and the town crest was back in favour. It ceased being used for a time around the mid-1960s when there was no emblem on shirts, a more modern looking BFC monogram and then, as I mentioned earlier, the seagull and tower designs.

The 2nd badge from the left (The Tower Badge) Is a design classic!
Very much like the Forest, Tricky Trees badge which is probably my favourite design. In fact, the Forest badge is over 30 years old but it still looks fresh and modern. Also, it's instantly recognisable as Nottingham Forest! (Even without the word Forest underneath)

It's easy to criticise....Fun too!
