Out of interest - does anyone know where the largest football terraces remain in England / Scotland / Wales.
I'd be interested so I can make sure I pay them a visit before they get converted to seating.

I think Wrexham have the biggest terrace left in the English leagues, not sure about the Welsh and Scotish leagues though.

Edit: Opps! Wrexham is in Wales, not England! rolleyes.gif

what about the somerset road end/home terrace at somerset park ayr, ground capacity is only around 10k with 2k in the stand and the railway end is quite small. reckon the terrace must be at least 5 or 6k capacity wise

also at the ground the stand must be one of the most un-molested Leitch designs left as the family stand at the somerset road end was only the only addition in the 80's

Northwich Victoria:

Halifax:

Also in rugby;

St. Helens

Scotland;

Queen of the South

Greenock Morton

Ayr United

And to make you a little bit jealous;

Brussels:

Obviously not in the UK, or even football, but at the gaelic Grounds in Thurles, both ends are still mainly terraces with a tiny amount of touchline seating. Both ends still held about 40,000 in 1984 or therabouts. Even with crowd restrictions both must still hold at least 15,000 each. Corks GAA grounds also has terracing at both ends and both are still allowed hold about 10,000 each. Not that I am a real gaelic fan but Limericks ground also still has major terrracing new 3 years ago as has the slightly smaller terracing in Galways newly rebuilt GAA grounds. Coke park also holds 12,500 at the completly rebuilt Hill 16 end. So if anyone ever wanted to see real big terracing then come to Ireland this Summer and go to some of the all Ireland Championship matches.

Halifax:

Exeter's Big Bank terrace - 4,000
Northwich's Dane Bank terrace - 3,300
Halifax stands - official capacity has just 4,000 standing places, but they could both hold 3,000+ by the looks of them.

I'd say the biggest terrace in England is at Odsal, home of Bradford Bulls

Although no football team has played there aside from Bradford City after the fire

I think the one end at Halifax is restricted to 1000 because of a lack of proper facilities. Normally they can hold over 3000.

When Halifax RLFC were in superleague they had a 9000 capacity, and we (Bulls) used to get a 3000 allocation (one end), during the late 90's when our away following was at its strongest we'd sell it out,

On the subject of Odsal the terrarced capacity is around 18000 in a long sweeping terrace down the side and around one end linking up with the main stand

If we're talking RL as well, then the South Stand at Headingley holds about 9000. I don't think it's as deep as the pop side at Odsal, but it does run the full length of the pitch, so makes up for it in length.

There's a ground if you want to go.

okay if we are talking general sports venues then Donington Park has to be the largest standing venue in the uk, over 100k for moto gp, only 1 stand at start of pit straight 500, startline temp stand 1000, temp stand at hollywood 500 so minumin 95k standing all on grassy banks with NO crush barriers to break up the crowd, okay most of the time you bring your own seating or sit on a blanket on the grass but during the race and the crowd surges it can be a bit scary as the baking is about 60 feet high and all grass/mud

looking across at hollywood from craner curves, see how steep

Leigh dont open the terraces at either end these days. Only the little paddock bit in front of the Tommy Sale Stand. Thats the only stand they bother opening these days. I think the rugby team still use the terraced ends though.

Wrexham's Kop End is still the largest remaining football terrace in all the English, Welsh and Scottish leagues, It will be knocked down after the end of this current season, So if you want to see it id get there soon.

What's it being replaced with, and what is it's current capacity?

Also, are you looking forward to the Conference? wink.gif

It currently holds 4,500, and is going to be replaced with a large all seater stand with a capacity of anything between 4/5000, And also may have a designated standing area for the group ( www.the12thman.org ) to stand and sing and play the drums etc.
Also im not looking forward to the Conference as wrexham wont be in it will they boyo laugh.gif

Sounds pretty good actually, have you got any artists impressions?

I doubt you'll avoid relegation now, you signed Rob Duffy, you're doomed! tongue.gif

Chester are probably going down, I'd like to see Daggers stay up for at least one season though.

I mentioned it in a similar thread, but if you want big terraces we still have em in Ireland. Not for Soccer but in Gaelic. Croke Park has a 13,500 capacity new end terrace, convertible into a 6,500 open seated area for real Football. There are many other open and covered terraces ranging up to 20,000 in capacity. The Odsal in bradford must be a very big terrace as well. I'd say 10,000.

Odsal's terraces actually hold about 20,000 between them.

Not sure on exact capacities, but I'd guess that to be about 12,000 on the Rooley Avenue End and 8000 on the Popular Side.
There's a ground if you want to go.

Twerton Park has a fair bit of terrace too, nowhere near that much though.
