To a certain extent, I think she's been a tad guilty of over-commentating, but most new television commentators do that at first. But generally not too bad.

Even worse than the Welsh bloke!

She sounded like when you commentate as a kid, starting every sentance with the word 'and'

So what is everyone's opinion then that the Beeb had a female commentator? Doing my Critical Research for my Media A-Level which looks at representation of Women in sports through the media.

Truth is, when it comes to football i just cant take women commentators/pundits/journalists seriously.
I mean i try to..but a little voice inside my heads says "a woman trying to to tell you about football" rolleyes.gif
The only exception to this rule is Gabby Yorath..and i think the only reason for that is because of her background.

Not sure if you heard her but IMHO she tried too hard and didn't sound great at times, but good luck to her, nothing against female commentators.

No, actualy i havent heard her and i guess its fair to say that it would be easier to accept a female commentator than it is say a pundit or journalist. There again..maybe not.

I travel to all our Wolves game now in a group of 4. There are 3 lads and 1 girl. Tilly (the girl, obviously) is as knowledgeble as the rest of us. In fact I would argue that she knows more than one of the lads in our group (no, not me!) and to be honest, I think he would be the first to admit it.

I think it comes down the fact that lads play football at school. I'm useless at football, never really had any real interest in playing the game, so why should I know any more than Tilly who like me, has never really played much? She goes home and away with Wolves, and every England home game....and she talks a lot of sense.....and i'm sure you'll all agree that Smudge on this forum knows her stuff? I think girls who have a genuine interest in the game are let down by the 'David Beckham brigade' (girls who watch football because they think it's fashionable, or because they fancy one of the players)!!

Although most of the male commentators (in Germany) are incompetent failures, I would not appreciate 'girl talk' during a football match. There needs tod be a law against. They can do it on women's football (in which nobody is really interedsted anyway)...

agree with that, and the woman might no everything there is to know about football. She is however, a lousy commentator

I've heard her too. Let's face it, in 2007 there is no reason why women can't commentate on top flight football. Problem is, this particular commentator isn't that good, and it's hard to escape the feeling that she's been promoted because of her gender not her ability, which is always a disasterous and hypocritcal policy (not surprsing in a PC-obsessed organisation like the Beeb though). Give her a chance and she might approve. I also think that the pro camp has deliberately misconstrued the comments of critics, most of whom dislike her style, by suggesting we are all a bunch of dyed in the wool dinosaurs who are anti-women.

It doesn't matter if she's a woman...and in fact it doesn't even matter if she's rubbish, because the vast majority of football commentators on this isle are frankly guff.

Incompetence is blind to matters of gender.

She'll be getting excited again once I score with her! biggrin.gif

Seriously though, thought she was quite poor but there's far worse out there. She'll get better as time goes on. As for the 'no women in football' type stuff - sorry but I don't subscribe to that crap.

The game was so boring that i would have appreciated some "cut a away" shots of her to liven things up.

Always make me squirm when i read men's attitudes about women's involement in football.

How many times do we hear "terrible when women talk about players legs"
But then as soon as the subject of women in football comes up, all you get is "id give her one"!

People pretend to be all modern and PC and then post pics of scantily clad tv pundits..perhaps this is indicative of mens uncertain role in modern society?
